Abstract: The federal initiative industry 4.0 has led to a considerable movement in

digitization. That will also have an impact on the digital factory. How will this change

affect the material flow simulation? Is it an opportunity to increase the importance or

is it a risk to become less important? This article examines both aspects and gives an

overview of possible risks and chances.
