John Flannery, the new leader at General Electric, has some breathing room. He told G.E. employees on Monday that he would “take a fresh look at the company” and do so with “a sense of urgency.”

Mr. Flannery, who will become chief executive on Aug. 1, told Wall Street analysts that his review would be completed by fall.
Many investors and analysts are pushing for a smaller, simpler company, which they say would lift earnings and G.E.’s underperforming stock. In a report on Monday, Scott Davis, an analyst at Barclays, declared that “G.E. needs an ‘AT&T-style’ breakup.”
